This was the year when Roland started skating with Jacob. They practised a lot in Penmanor, but on weekends or holidays they would go all the way to Fairfield where someone had built a big ramp in the trees behind the recreation ground there.
When they took their skateboards to Sidmouth it was frowned upon by Joe and Irene who seemed to think only hooligans went about on skateboards. But a place was found where it seemed acceptable for them to go skating, which was along the steep driveways at The Knowle when it was quiet in the evenings.
Even at night in the winter time they skated. One night, when they hadn’t come in at the promised time, Rose became anxious. They’d mentioned skating under the road bridge at Pikes Pool Lane, so she went down there. There they were, just the two of them enjoying themselves on their skateboards in the frosty moonlight.
Roland and his brother also became keen on computer games.
