Roland’s interest in chess continued - he won the Parkside School tournament - and it was unfortunate that there was no local chess club he could join. He moved up to North Bromsgrove High School but was uninspired by opportunities to play chess there.
He would spend evenings composing the beginnings of imaginative stories on the computer, with a rich use of language, and the stories were often humorous.
It was probably this year that he had a good friend called Luke who, sadly, had to move away to Devon to live. The two were very alike and kept in touch whenever they could.
It also seems that Roland was beginning to use cannabis.
