No photographs can be found of this year of Roland’s life.
He was playing truant from school. Sometimes it would be because of the increasing self-consciousness he felt about his thin legs when he had to change for PE; he didn’t want anyone to see him in shorts.
He would still go on the family trips to visit his grandparents at Seaton, but would usually have preferred to stay in Bromsgrove and be out and about with his friends.
Eventually, after being increasingly in trouble at school for truanting or failing to do his work properly, he was excluded for a term and sent to the Rubery Unit to work for his mock GCSEs.
