At this time Roland was very friendly with James who lived at Catshill. James was a good drummer, and Roland was getting better at the guitar.
This was the first year that Roland went to Glastonbury, with James. They went as litter pickers, being driven there by parents and taking a cumbersome old-fashioned tent that once belonged to Vi and Bert. Although the tent ended up a mess by being blown down at one point, it fared better than most other tents in the great sea of mud that was the festival that year.
Roland consented to go to Seaton again, and there was a memorable seven-mile walk with Rose along the shady green undercliff, emerging into dazzling sunlight on the beach at Lyme Regis.
Another attempt was made at education – to do horticulture at Pershore College. It lasted only a few weeks. One of the problems was that the college weren’t able to find work placements for all their students, and Roland couldn’t find a suitable employer that he’d be able to reach without transport.
