Bron and Roland’s preferred method of travelling was hitching. It was fun, meeting interesting people, and Bron said that when Rol was out of Bromsgrove he would come out of his shell and could talk to anyone, from any walk of life.
They hitched to Glastonbury and arrived at the festival in the early hours in a van load of hippies, and had an adventure climbing the fence soon after daybreak. It was the year Hole played and REM headlined. Bron said they discovered fantastic unheard of musicians playing acoustic guitars to tiny audiences in the small tents and vowed never to forget their names, and immediately forgot their names.
After the festival they were stranded in pouring rain for several night hours, following a lift from a wealthy man in a Mercedes. They were rescued by some Bristol University students who took them and another festival straggler off to their student accommodation for a while and a chance to catch up on sleep before continuing their journey.
Roland would sometimes suggest a walk with Rose, up the lanes to the canal, and gradually in conversations during those times he revealed something of his thoughts and feelings and even of his drug taking. He insisted he could handle the drugs. Nothing his worried parents said or did, of course, would make any difference.
