A year of tremendous change for Roland.
There were good times with friends or family, and a Glastonbury Festival when he and Bron got separated and spent most of the time trying to find one another again. And there was getting himself clean of heroin and kitted out with new clothes, for a twelve-week visit with Bron to her family in Oregon.
The time in America was a wonderful experience for Roland, with Bron’s parents (who were very fond of him) taking them out on trips and as far as California, and with Roland helping out with work that they or Bron’s brother needed doing.
They returned in October, with Roland looking fitter and stronger and more confident than he’d ever been, and enthusiastic about finding a way to return to America to work for a friend of Bron’s family who’d said he would employ him if he could get the right permit.
But, after a few weeks back in Bromsgrove, things went badly wrong between Roland and Bron. In December he returned to live with his parents, deeply upset, and he changed again from the healthy optimistic person he’d become so recently.
He got two part-time cleaning jobs and worked hard for a while until missing work due to a hangover caused him to lose them, and by now he was back on drugs again, trying to forget his unhappiness.
