There was a Humpty Dumpty birthday cake made by Vi for Roland’s fourth birthday, and a trip on the Severn Valley railway followed by a meal in an Indian restaurant – he had decided he liked Indian food.
Other new places for Roland this spring and summer were Cannon Hill Park, and Kinver, and West Midlands Safari Park with Joe and Irene. He spent time in the garden with his brothers making ‘camps’, and a little later he properly went camping, in Cornwall for a week with Vi and Bert and his cousins.
He began accompanying Rose and his ‘bruvvers’ on walks with the Ramblers Association. On a Malverns ramble with Parkside Parents Association, in sweltering weather, he did well – walking six or seven miles. When Rose and his brothers went on a weekend Ramblers trip to the Berwyn mountains Roland was upset; he felt he was a good enough walker to go, but it was thought it would be too tough for him.
When Roland did a test from a book called ‘Living with a Gifted Child’ it showed his IQ to be over 130.
December brought his last day of playgroup and he was one of the three kings in the nativity play. The family stayed at Vi and Bert’s over Christmas; Jeremy couldn’t do Roland’s stocking until after 2 am because he was quietly lying awake waiting for Father Christmas. He liked his Roman armour present very much, and he and cousin Laura got on well, playing robbers.
