Roland Humphries 1980 to 2003

Age 5

1985 Roland

Roland had an exciting time when his Meadows School class visited the fire station. He had a go at “driving” the fire engine with the hose, and tried on a gas mask.

A few days of the summer holidays were spent, with his parents and brothers, with friends in Lancashire. Roland had a ferry trip across the Mersey and, on a walk in rainy woodland, met a man with a tame ferret which ran up and investigated him.

At Parent Consultation Evening his teacher, Mrs Maskell, said that Roland was in a dream half the time, leaving his things about and not being able to find them, but that he had a lovely sense of humour.

He went on a school trip to Birmingham Hippodrome to see ‘The Gingerbread Man’.

It was in November that Roland, with his parents and brothers, moved from Joe and Irene’s house to Penmanor in Finstall. Grandparents Joe and Irene who had helped to look after the children while Rose was working had decided to retire to Devon.

Roland continued at Meadows School even though his home was no longer near there. Most mornings the boys would take the long walk to their schools with Rose, to walk back with her when she met them in the afternoons.

Roland began to play with neighbours’ children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being outside and riding his tricycle up and down the pavement in the quiet green cul-de-sac which was now his home.
