Roland’s schools were Meadows First School then Parkside Middle School. He had loved being read to for some time before going to school, and he made a good start at Meadows although he was a bit of a daydreamer. Later on he didn’t do as well at school as he should – there were instances of outstanding work between spells of underachieving.
He enjoyed family holidays at Sidmouth in Devon, where Irene and Joe now lived; he played chess with Jeremy, becoming very interested and proficient, and he had a skateboard and spent a lot of time skating with Jacob.
