One day while in the High Street Rose gave Roland some money to buy a snack to eat while he waited for her. She came out of a shop to see people smiling at him as they walked past - he was standing there chewing his way through a wholemeal loaf.

Rose and Jeremy took the boys to visit another house where Vi and Bert were house sitting, at Blakedown. Roland and Jacob enjoyed playing with the friendly Staffordshire bull terrier there.

Highlights of school this summer were that in assembly Roland read a good poem he'd composed, and he went on a school trip to the Black Country Museum.

There was Playscheme for a while in the summer holidays, or an occasional visit from his school friend Steven, or Roland would go to Steven’s house.

The family paid a weekend visit to the Abergavenny area (Rose’s childhood home), staying in a Youth Hostel, so the boys were shown the places Rose loved. One of them was Partrishow Church where Roland just had to have a go on the organ.

One day Jonathan, using his OS map, took Roland for a walk to Bradley Green (six or seven miles away). Roland was very tired on the way back, but Jonathan was good with his little brother and Roland was very fond of him.

In the autumn Roland with the other local children became happily engaged in digging a BMX track in the rough land at the edge of the nearby recreation ground – one of their favourite haunts for several years.

At March Parent Consultation evening his teacher Mrs Dolphin said that Roland had started being naughty again after having improved for a while, and wasn’t reaching his true potential at all.
