On the 18th of March 1980, at 9 o’clock in the evening, Roland was born at Luton & Dunstable General Hospital. His birth became an emergency due to prolapse of the umbilical cord, and he was rushed to resuscitation but soon returned to Jeremy and Rose.
The following day they were told he had twisted feet (bilateral talipes), and two days later his little feet and legs were encased in plaster casts.
In spite of his birth problem he did well developmentally and was an alert, smiley baby. He had visits to grandparents in Stourbridge and near Abergavenny, and sometimes to great uncles and aunts. Similar visits would continue all through his and his brothers’ childhood. Sometimes his feet would be in plaster, and sometimes he would be wearing special boots which caused both feet to be joined by a rigid bar. It meant his crawling progress was slower than it might have been, but it didn’t prevent him from getting where he wanted.
