Roland went to North Bromsgrove High School, showing a particular talent for writing. But he became more and more dissatisfied with school and didn’t do well.
For a while he enjoyed going to the theatre with his parents, to Birmingham Rep or Stratford. He became interested in various sorts of music, and he learned to play the guitar. During his teenage years Roland had two real girlfriends, first Rachel and then Bron.
He didn’t settle into any college course on leaving school, had a few very temporary jobs, and was mostly unemployed. The reason for Roland’s lack of achievement was eventually found to be his lack of self esteem and increasing use of drugs.
