Thoughts of Rol

With apologies to anyone who’s been unintentionally missed out, here are remarks said or written after Roland died, by his friends:

Andrew, Anita and Bill, Avon, Bron, Craig, Gav, Ginger, Graham, Jess, Joe, Josie, Laura, Lis,
Lisa, Luke, Mark, Richard, Rula, Sandie, Steve, Will, Robert and David and Dan

(The quotations are not necessarily in the same order as these names.)

We loved Roland. Everybody who met him while he stayed with us thought he was wonderful.

A truly gentle spirit. Safe now and for always, free from burden and pain.

A kind man and a good friend. We used to have proper giggles together.

This card can never be anything but trite when it comes to Roland. There is not a card that will ever suffice…

No matter how nasty I was to him, he never retaliated with similar words although he had good reason to.

I think about him every day.

Roland was a gentleman. I can’t believe how much I miss him already.

Rol had a big heart for all his close friends.

Rol, you were a cool kid, one of the best.

Missing Rol already.

Words can’t say how much we’ll miss you, Rol.

One of the best guys I’ve ever known.

I want to say what I feel but I can’t. Love always to Rol.

He was a very special, very beautiful young man.

… I had seen him so recently and as always he was full of plans and hope for the future. I consider myself privileged to have known Roland for three years. We shared a love of language and writing and I enjoyed the spirited discussions we had on many occasions… I always hoped and prayed that he would overcome his addiction and fulfil the very real potential we all knew he had.

I knew he was a special person the first time I saw him, framed in the kitchen doorway; it was as though he had an aura about him.

He was always polite and considerate to me.

I was really cut up about Roland; I really liked him.

He was always very clever.

My sister always used to say Rol had a sweet face.

He was a caring and generous man.

He'd been in my house only weeks before… He was a darling.

Although extremely emotional, the service at All Saints was really nice and did Roland justice.

We have some great memories of Rol. He was incredibly witty and intelligent like no one else you would ever meet. We are sure we speak for many people when we say he is greatly missed.

No attempt is made here to show the thoughts and feelings of Rose and Jeremy, Jonathan and Jacob, and Roland’s grandparents; it would be too overwhelming. We loved him dearly.
