Most of Roland’s time was spent with Bron. She rekindled Roland’s interest in books and from then on he read widely, and he wrote all sorts of things – usually unfinished - and he played his guitar. He struggled with his many hang-ups and his drug problem, and wanted to change how he was. His three months in America with Bron’s parents seemed a very real turning point, but after his return things went downhill for him.
He and Bron split up and there were months of misery and heroin taking for Roland followed by an optimistic time sparked by a new friend; this gave him a determination to get clean again. But, before he could reach the end of the waiting list for a methadone programme twenty-three year old, intelligent, articulate, sensitive, much-loved Roland was dead from heroin.
